The Common Purpose 360 Day - when was the last time you did something to broaden your horizons?

On 10 October every year, 25,000 people will be doing something to broaden their horizons. What will you be doing…?

The 360 Day is an open invitation on 10/10 each year to take time out of your day to do something that might make you see things differently. You may choose to do something on your own, or with others; something simple or involved; online or face-to-face; local or international. It's up to you.

Try something experiential and out of your comfort zone on or around 10/10 - go somewhere you've never been, take part in an unusual activity, meet someone you wouldn't normally meet, work with different people. Common Purpose will also offer special events and activities, both on and offline, on and around 10/10.

Contact us at info@commonpurpose360.org to let us know what you will be doing on 10/10.

Here's some examples of what people got up to on the last 360 Day:

• Over 200 people took part in the Leading Beyond Authority Masterclass in London, in which some of the leaders featured in Julia Middleton’s book “Beyond Authority: Leadership in a Changing World” spoke about how they lead complex change, be it at work or in society.

• someone emailed to tell us, "On 10/10 I am going down to Jamie Oliver's restaurant '15' in London, to train the apprentices in Emotional Intelligence. On the way home I shall read a motivational book by Steve Chandler and make at least ONE decision that will change mine and someone else's life!"

• Another person said that since October was Black History Month, she worked with the Wilberforce Museum to give talks on the perception of Africa and slavery, and visited the Full Sutton prison to work with inmates there after learning that 25% of them are from the BME community.

• Alumni in Sheffield met up to discuss how charities might be affected by the economic slowdown and tried to come up with some practical and workable ideas that could be easily implemented by local charities without great costs and in the very near future.

• one person invited you to raise your awareness of mental health issues and the incumbent barriers and stigmas on this day, as 10/10 is World Mental Health Day.

Have you thought about submitting your ideas from 10/10 to Google's Project 10100 (pronounced "Project 10 to the 100th")? It's a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.

Why not try a "Learning Practice", small tasks or challenges through which you can experience what it can feel like to be in a new and unfamiliar situation and develop your ability to lead beyond authority.

Or how about browsing through the list of inspiring reading choices, recommended by some of Britain's most successful business people and fellow Common Purpose alumni?

Sir Michael Bichard, Chairman of the Design Council, recommends Ken Loach's “Kes”. He comments “I saw Kes forty years ago as a young local government officer. The way in which the boy is treated by every public service he encounters shows what an impact these have on people’s lives and how damaging they can be if they are insensitive, inflexible and uncoordinated. I was able to tell Ken in person recently how he had changed my perspective. I never wanted to be part of that kind of bureaucratic response."
